SOLO exhibition “Creation” at Aal Church

ART IN ROADSIDE CHURCHES brings together the artists of the Danish Artists’ Association in Southern and South Jutland around a shared project: a site-specific exhibition distributed across roadside churches in the region. Roadside churches are open and welcome visitors outside of church services.

The aim is to raise awareness of the roadside churches and contemporary art. With this project, the potential of the church space is activated as a meeting place between tradition and the present. Each artist has the opportunity to engage with the individual church’s distinctive architecture, history, and function as a roadside church. Through the works, the church’s role as a place where one can seek shelter—both physically and spiritually—is explored and strengthened, and where silence and pause are given room. Cultural heritage and art are linked along the route of roadside churches—present in the midst of the modern person’s journey. The churches’ parish councils and the artists have collaborated to provide the churches with a work of art that is temporarily integrated into the church space, thereby creating new narratives, reflections, and space for dialogue.

Welcome to Art in Roadside Churches from 1 May to 1 October 2026
